HT: Discussion

The titles of the three books in Hard Times are "Sowing", "Reaping", and "Garnering".  How might these titles represent different ideas, concepts, metaphors, or themes to different characters, especially to such opposites like Louisa vs. Tom, Blackpool vs. Slackbridge, and Sissy vs. Mr. Gradgrind?

  1. I'm not quite sure how to explain the specifics of "reaping" and "garnering". But all of them involve harvesting. I feel like they represent how the educational system works. For example, in the book "sowing", the first chapter starts off in Gradgrind's class room, "I want facts..." starting off in a class room reveals that the teachers are "planting the seeds" of facts into the students heads.
